Tips From a Lifestyle photographer to help make your next session feel like you

So you booked your family session — yay! You’re excited, maybe a little nervous, and definitely wondering where to start. What do we wear? Will the kids cooperate? How do we actually get photos that feel like us?

As a lifestyle family photographer here in Utah, I’ve worked with all kinds of families and let me tell you — some of the most common stressors are totally avoidable. Whether you are planning your first photo session or just want it to go more smoothly than the last one, here are five mistakes I see most often and how you can avoid them for a relaxed, connected session that reflects your family perfectly.

Mistake 1: Waiting Too Long To Book

If you are hoping for summer or fall family photos in Utah or that dreamy golden light, the earlier you reach out, the better. My calendar fills up fast, especially during peak seasons like summer and fall.

The best time to book your session is at least 1 to 2 months in advance. This gives us time to choose the perfect location, work through styling together, and build out a session that feels intentional.

Pro tip: Some of the most underrated months for family sessions are late April and early May — beautiful light, fewer crowds, and stunning locations.

Mistake 2: Overthinking Outfits

This one sneaks up on people all the time (even me!). Styling can feel overwhelming, but it does not have to be. The key is to wear something that feels comfortable and reflects your family’s personality. Soft neutrals, warm earthy tones, and natural textures always photograph beautifully — especially for outdoor lifestyle family sessions.

You don’t have to match perfectly. Coordinating with color tones and textures works so much better than identical outfits. I send every client a full styling guide and help you plan looks that work well with your location, the season, and your unique vibe.

Mistake 3: Underestimating How Late Golden Hour Can Be (Especially Summer Sessions)

Golden hour is beautiful — that soft, glowy light right before sunset gives your photos such a warm, dreamy feel. But it also tends to fall right around (or after) bedtime, especially in the summer.

If your session is later in the evening, one of the best ways to help your kids feel their best is to plan ahead. Think later naps, a slower afternoon, maybe even a little rest time before heading out. I know routines are important, but making a few small adjustments that day can go a long way in helping your little ones last longer and enjoy the session.

A full belly, comfy clothes, and some extra snuggles before we start always help too. And don’t worry — I’m very used to working around toddler energy and baby moods. We’ll take breaks when needed and follow their lead while still capturing all the magic.

Mistake 4: Treating it Like a "Smile and Be Done" Kind of Shoot

Traditional family photos often focus on everyone smiling at the camera — but that’s not what storytelling sessions are about. This is a chance to freeze the real connection between you and your people.

When you’re planning your lifestyle family session, think beyond the poses. Is there an activity your family loves? A place that feels like home? Do your kids love collecting rocks, picking flowers, or snuggling in a cozy blanket? These are the moments that tell your story.

The goal is not to get one perfect picture for your holiday card. The goal is to create a gallery full of photos that feel like real memories.

Mistake 5: Expecting Perfection

No session goes exactly as planned. And honestly — that is where the magic lives.

Your kids might be silly. Someone might trip. Your baby might need extra snuggles. These are not problems. These are moments. The real ones that make your family yours.

As your photographer, I am not just here to snap pretty pictures. I am here to document the way your toddler reaches for your hand without thinking. The way your partner looks at you when you are not looking. The quiet, unscripted magic that happens in between.

Let go of the pressure and just show up as yourselves. I will take care of the rest.
