Location Location Location!
You've heard it before, but I'll say it again. LOCATION IS EVERYTING! When planning your session start by envisioning what you want to feel when you look at these photos. Do you want to feel the serenity of the beautiful outdoors, the cozy familiar atmosphere of your own home, or a more modern chic vibe of a studio? When planning your session the location should be the first thing you decide, that will set the vibe for your whole session!
Choosing a Flattering Outfit
Of course, we all know that outfits are a huge part of any photoshoot, but it can be extremely overwhelming when trying to pick one out so let's break it down a bit!
Complementing the Bump: Choose clothing that is flattering to your bump. There are many ways to style it. Opt for styles that will complement your adorable bump! This is the perfect time to show it off! Flowing dresses are a popular choice for a more soft, elegant look, as they gracefully drape over the belly. However, be cautious not to mistake this with baggy clothing that hides your figure. Another common style is of course form-fitting outfits and open belly designs. These accentuate and emphasize the shape and curves of the body. The tricky part about this is making sure it is not too tight, or it can cause unflattering lines. Above all make sure you are wearing something you are comfortable in!
Fabric and Texture: When it comes to fabric selection for your maternity photoshoot, comfort and style are key. Opting for fabrics that not only feel great but also look fantastic in photos is crucial for achieving stunning images. Soft, breathable materials like cotton, jersey-knit or silk are top choices for maternity wear. These fabrics offer a gentle, lightweight feel against your skin, allowing you to move freely and comfortably throughout the photoshoot. Additionally, it's important to steer clear of fabrics that wrinkle easily or feel overly restrictive. Wrinkles and creases can detract from the overall appearance of your outfit in photographs, while restrictive fabrics may cause discomfort and limit your ability to pose naturally and comfortably.
Color Palette: The colors you choose can make or break the overall appearance of your session. Many photographers recommend opting for neutrals and other subtle colors, such as pastels, because they tend to photograph the best and are flattering on just about everyone. If you do prefer a more colorful vibe, be sure to choose colors that complement your skin tone and complexion!
Shoes: Comfort is key when it comes to footwear for maternity photoshoots. Opt for shoes that provide support and stability while still complementing the overall aesthetic of the outfit. Ballet flats, sandals, low-heeled boots or even barefoot are practical choices that strike the perfect balance between style and comfort.
Selecting the perfect outfit for your maternity photoshoot is an exciting opportunity to showcase your unique style while celebrating the beauty of pregnancy. Whether you opt for a flowing dress that elegantly drapes over your bump or a form-fitting ensemble that accentuates your curves, the key is to prioritize comfort and confidence. By choosing flattering fabrics, coordinating colors, and comfortable footwear, you'll not only look amazing but also feel at ease throughout the entire session. Remember, this is your time to shine, so embrace your inner glow and let your outfit reflect the joy and excitement of this special moment in your life.
Posing and Body Confidence
If you've ever felt self-conscious or uncomfortable about your changing body, know that you're not alone. It's one of the most common concerns expecting moms face! But let me tell you something: STOP! You're literally growing a miracle in your belly, and it's the most beautiful thing in the world! I know it's easier said than done, but it's true. YOU. ARE. AMAZING. Now, let's talk about looking and feeling your best!
Normalize the Change: Like I mentioned before, let's start by normalizing this change! Every stretch mark, curve, and bump is a testament to the incredible journey of motherhood you're on, and it's beautiful.
Make Sure You're Comfortable: This ties in with everything we discussed in the outfit section. Comfort is key! Pregnancy is uncomfortable enough, so prioritize your comfort, and you'll feel your best.
Posing: Embrace that bump, girl! After all, that's the whole purpose of your session, right?! Your photographer will guide you through various poses and angles, so don't worry too much about specifics. Just relax! It helps to keep moving, even if it's just a little bit. You can play with your hair, laugh, sway, or even try walking or dancing.
At the end of the day, just have fun and be yourself! You're a strong, beautiful woman who DESERVES to be celebrated during this special time.
Props and Other Sentimental Items
Incorporating props and personal touches into your maternity photoshoot can make your session extra special. These little details allow you to infuse your images with meaning, personality, and love. Adding props to your session helps tell your story a little bit more.
Some items I recommend are ultrasound images, baby shoes or clothes, heirlooms, florals, books or letters, pregnancy journals, or pets (even though they are more family than props ;))
Timing and Preparation
Timing and preparation are very important and go hand in hand. When to book a maternity session is probably one of the questions I get asked the most, but there's more to it than just "You should book when you are exactly this many weeks"... there is also some preparation you should consider before your shoot.
When Should You Book?: When it comes to scheduling your maternity photoshoot, timing is everything for showcasing that beautiful baby bump! Most photographers suggest aiming for a session between 28 to 32 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, your belly is usually nice and round, making it the star of the show, yet you're still feeling comfortable enough to strike a pose and move around effortlessly. But every pregnancy is different. So, it's always a good idea to chat with your photographer to find the perfect time that suits you best.
Preparing For Your Session: There are a couple of important things for you to do when preparing for your session. The biggest thing is to be well-rested and stay hydrated! It may not seem like it, but standing and moving in front of a camera for an hour can be kind of exhausting, and in order to keep you and baby safe, being well-rested and hydrated is so important. So, get a good night's rest the night before and drink water all day—don't forget to bring some to your session! Another thing I would recommend is to pamper yourself! Get your hair and nails done, or try a spray tan. Heck, go get a prenatal massage! Whatever makes you feel and look your best!
