If you've ever looked at someone elses photos and thought
"That's beautiful, I want something unique to tell my own story"
THis blog post is for you
Because when it comes to your family session, I’m not here to just give you a pretty backdrop or Pinterest-perfect poses. I’m here to help you tell your story. The real, raw, joy-filled, chaotic, loving one you’re living right now.
That’s the heart of what I do as a storytelling family photographer in Utah, and I’m sharing a behind-the-scenes look at how we make it happen. From your first inquiry to the final gallery. Featuring a recent paddleboarding adventure with the incredible Webb family, this is a peek into the planning process that brings your session to life.
It All Starts With Connection: The Planning Call
Once you’ve booked your session, the first thing you’ll receive from me is more than just a confirmation email. I send over a curated Storytelling Session Planning Guide, a short but thoughtful questionnaire to get your ideas flowing, and a link to schedule a one-on-one planning call with me.
Why a call?
Because when it comes to creating photos that are meaningful, we have to start with you. Your family. Your routines. Your chaos. Your love.
This isn’t just about checking off boxes. It’s about having a conversation.
On our planning call, I’ll ask you things like:
- “What does a perfect day with your family look like?”
- “What are your favorite things to do together?”
- “Where do you feel most connected and at ease?”
These may seem like simple questions, but they hold the key to unlocking your session’s story.
The Webb Family: A Paddleboarding Session Inspired by Real Life
When Braydee first reached out, I asked her one of my favorite questions:
"What are some of your favorite things to do as a family?"
Her answer?
“We love paddleboarding together. It’s one of our favorite ways to spend time outside.”
Immediately, I knew we had the foundation for something incredibly special.
On our planning call, I suggested that we take the session to the lake during golden hour and build the whole experience around that memory.
Instead of forcing her family into someone else’s idea of a “picture-perfect” shoot, we let their actual life lead the way.
The result? A dreamy, golden-lit session full of movement, laughter, a curious toddler, and a pup who was absolutely part of the story. It was playful and imperfect in the best way. And it told a story that no one else could replicate because it was theirs.
Why I Design Every Session Around Your Story
There are so many talented photographers out there, and lots of gorgeous locations to choose from. But here’s the truth I’ve learned as a family photographer in Utah County.
The photos that matter most aren’t the ones with the “perfect” backdrop.
They’re the ones that make you feel something.
And that happens when your photos are rooted in your real life.
My sessions aren’t about getting 75 smiling-at-the-camera shots.
They’re about capturing the way your daughter tugs at your dress when she wants to be picked up. The way your toddler lights up when he’s in the water. The way your partner looks at you when you’re laughing.
That’s why the planning process is so important. I take the time to listen, learn about your family, and dream up something meaningful. Whether that’s on a paddleboard, in the kitchen, at a quiet trailhead, or somewhere that means something to you.
Real Life Storytelling Session Ideas That Come From You
If you’re not sure what your story would look like in photos, don’t worry. That’s what I’m here for. During our planning call, I’ll help you uncover what’s unique about your family and suggest ways we can turn that into a visual story.
Here are a few real ideas that have come from past clients:
- Paddleboarding on the lake at sunset (hello, Webb family!)
- Backyard gardening with kids and chickens
- Cookie baking and messy flour fights in the kitchen
- Saturday morning pancakes in pajamas
- Exploring a favorite family trail with your dog
- A cozy winter session reading books by the fire
- Backyard summer splash party
- S'mores by the fire
- Apple picking in the orchard
These moments might feel ordinary to you, but they’re the ones your kids will remember. And they deserve to be documented.
This Isn't Just a Photoshoot. It's a Memory You'll Come Back To
What I want every client to know is this. You don’t have to “perform” during your session.
You don’t have to have it all together.
You just have to show up and let me see the beauty in your everyday.
When we plan your session together, I want you to feel excited.
Not overwhelmed by outfit choices or Pinterest pressure. Genuinely excited to create something that feels like home.
This is the core of what I offer.
A personalized family photo session that starts with listening to your story, dreaming up something special together, and creating an experience that’s just as beautiful as the images you’ll walk away with.
